Greetings!
This summer has been
a super-busy season of fun, learning, sharing, celebrating, and standing proud
for feminine expression in all of its many aspects, and the Gems
were part of it all! For two back-to-back
weekends in late June, we joined LGBT Pride festivals
in both Sacramento and San Francisco. We hope you'll enjoy our
reports on those two annual landmark events, including a Facets first: a
special linked photo page showing off all the Gems who marched in their
Southern Belle attire, along with their non-costumed sisters who joined in the
Gems' San Francisco Pride parade contingent. Also the same
weekend in San Francisco, the Trans March took place on Friday evening, in a different part of town. We have a separate report on that event for
you too. A couple of weekends
later saw the first annual Pacific Coast Living Conference, also in San Francisco,
and also attended by a group of Gems. And a week after
that, the staff at the Arden Fair Sephora makeup store partnered with the Gems
to stage another first for all concerned: a special private
shopping party! Finally, as if all
that wasn't enough, came the Gems' own annual Hawaiian Luau Party, which is always one of our biggest and most popular celebrations. The record attendance and the great time
enjoyed by all are re-captured in this big summer blockbuster issue of Facets,
for the pleasant recollection of those who attended, and to describe the fun
for those who missed out. Please join us
there next year if you can! To round out our
first bi-monthly issue, we've included another practical and very helpful
beauty advice column from Carollyn Olson, this time dealing with overcoming five o'clock shadow in order to achieve a more feminine presentation. Happy reading and
stay cool! Warm regards, Your Facets Editorial

| Gems Wow Crowds and Win Awards in World-Famous Parade

San Francisco Pride 2010 took place the weekend of June 26-27. Here
is its description from the official event website: "2010 marks the 40th
anniversary of the San Francisco Pride Celebration and Parade. The theme
is 'Forty and Fabulous' ... With over 200 parade contingents, 300
exhibitors, and more than a dozen community-run stages and venues, the
San Francisco Pride Celebration and Parade is the largest gathering of
LGBT people and allies in the nation." |
San Francisco Trans March by Karen S.
|
| A Pride Parade of Our Own

San Francisco's Pride Weekend was kicked off on June 25th by the 7th
Annual Trans March. The theme for this year's march was "United by
Pride, United by Power" and around 20 Gems were there to participate.

Tricks of the Trade by Carollyn Olson
|
| 5 O'Clock Shadow
Are you a victim of the dreaded "5 o'clock shadow?"
Many girls, no matter how closely they shave their facial hair, find that
stubble can appear within a couple of hours and can ruin their makeup and
appearance.
I'm fortunate to have a blond beard, which is slow- growing. With the help
of a close shave, a good pore minimizer, and a reliable beard cover plus my
regular Almay base makeup, I can usually go about 12 hours before any
stubble appears. However, I have a number of friends who are just the
opposite.

Pacific Coast Living Conference by Karen S.
|
| PCL Offers Something for Everyone
On Saturday, July 10, 2010 the first annual Pacific Cost Living Conference
was held at the South San Francisco Convention Center. This was the
first major transgender conference in Northern California since California Dreaming in 2008. It was my very first transgender
conference and I loved every second of it!

Gems Third Annual Luau Breaks Attendance Record
|
| 77 Attend Biggest and Best Gems Party Ever!

On Saturday, July 24th, The River City Gems held their 3rd annual
Hawaiian Luau Party at the spacious and welcoming home of members Kimberly and Jilly
B. Officially, the party began at 3:00 p.m., but unofficially it
began the previous day, when around twenty Gems had volunteered to
help decorate and get everything set up for the big event. There
were pizza and appetizers aplenty for all who pitched in and had fun at
Friday's set-up party, which set the tone for the Hawaiian-themed luau
to come. And what a huge event it turned out to be!
