Question of the Month
Asked at Sacramento Pride
"Do you think society is more tolerant of transgender people today than it was a decade ago?"

Paula

Yes I do. I was out and about 15 years ago, and then I took about a 15 year break, and the difference now is huge - the way people treat you, and the availability of transgender groups, everything. It's wonderful.

Gems Raise Awareness at LGBT Pride Celebrations

The River City Gems participated in two regional LGBT Pride celebrations in the month of June: Sacramento Pride on June 20, and San Francisco Pride on June 28. The goal was to educate the public and raise awareness of the transgender community.

Earrings

Many ladies, after seeing my picture, or meeting me in public, ask me if I have pierced ears. The answer is "No!!!"

The second question is: "Then why do your ears look pierced?"

It's actually very easy to create the pierced ear illusion, with the assistance of actual pierced earrings.

Staying Safe by Rebecca
Tips from the Gender Community Safety Seminar

On June 6, law enforcement and trans advocates gathered in Sacramento to present the first Gender Community Safety Seminar. The seminar provided tips and education on how trans people can minimize their risks and what to do when faced with danger or harm.

Gems Rock Out at Hedwig
On June 25, a group of ten River City Gems attended a performance of the rock musical Hedwig and the Angry Inch at Sacramento's New Helvetia Theatre.

Hedwig tells the story of Hansel, an East German boy who has undergone a botched sex change operation and becomes "Hedwig." After being left by her husband, Hedwig forms a band called "The Angry Inch."

The theatre donated a portion of its profits to supporting local trans youth.

Several of the Gems who attended were fans of the film version of Hedwig, and were excited to see it performed live. "The show was amazing," said Rachel Morley. "It made me aware of things I had never picked up on in the film."
To Never Transition by Calie Alexandra

I'm married to a loving wife and mother.

She would say that I am a loving husband and father.

I'm a Baby Boomer. I guess that makes me older than some of you.

I feel young. I think young. I'm full of energy.

I have a career. I've been fairly successful.

Some conservative talk show hosts would say that I am a member of the "drive-by" media. Guess they're right.

I believe in God.

I'm transgender. I suppose a therapist and I could come to an agreement that I am a transsexual. I don't consider myself a crossdresser or a transvestite.

I have this inner voice that has been talking to me for as far back as I can remember. She can be bitchy. She can be forceful. She can be sexy. She can take something as innocent as a woman walking down the hall at work and tell me that I should be her.

She is always with me. She never leaves. She is often in my dreams. She can steal valuable time from me.

She can drive me crazy.

Her name is Gender Dysphoria and she will probably be with me until the day I die.

Coming Out to My Niece by Wendy Brown

My 19-year- old niece came to visit me for 10 days from England. Lauren actually came en route from New York State, where she was at a camp for disadvantaged kids from Harlem as a counselor (so as you can see Lauren is quite mature). I told my CD Mother (Nickie Star) about her visit and she advised me to come out to her, saying in this day and age teenagers are more tuned into gender issues than possibly adults.
Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow by Andi Robertson
Shaving, waxing, plucking, epilating, depilatories, and electrolysis.  So many ways to remove unwanted hair.  What's a girl to do?  Many of us are less than satisfied with the results we get from shaving.  Whether it's the irritation, the razor bumps, the rough stubble or just the recurring inconvenience of shaving itself, lots of us are convinced there has to be a better way.  After seeing several online discussions about hair removal lately, I thought I would like to share some of my own amusing little vignettes on the subject.
